Germany tore Argentina apart to book their place in the semi-finals and, for now at least,

end Diego Maradona's dream of winning the World Cup as coach to go with his victory

as captain in 1986.

Inspired by Bastian Schweinsteiger and two-goal hero Miroslav Klose, Joachim Loew's side scored four times for the third game at this tournament in what was a devastating attacking display.

The only cloud on Germany's horizon is that the impressive Mueller picked up a "booking".

That means he will miss the last-four clash with Spain...

Paraguay vs Spain = 0 : 1 (HT = 0 : 0)

4 x for Paraguay YELLOW CARD   2 x for Spain YELLOW CARD

David Villa snatched a late winner to book Spain's first appearance in a World Cup semi-final as they beat Paraguay in a largely disappointing quarter-final tie.

Villa's goal after 82 minutes - his fifth of the tournament- struck one post, rolled across the goal-line and hit the other, before finally nestling in the net and came seconds after substitute Pedro had also hit the woodwork.

120 mins: RED CARD Luis Suarez (Uruguay)
ET 16min: There are a lot of tired legs out there.
Now EXTRA TIME:
Ghana are bidding to become the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals
93min: 30 extra minutes?
93 mins: YELLOW CARD

Dominic Adiyiah wins a corner down the Ghana right and gesticulates to the crowd to try and get them vocal again - great work from the 20-year-old who has only just come on.

John Mensah is shown a yellow card for dissent.

89min: 30 extra minutes?
88min: Not long left of normal time now, still Uruguay 1-1 Ghana.
77 mins: YELLOW CARD

Hans Sarpei is booked for holding back Luis Suarez as he tries to get away down the Uruguay right. It's really quite tense at Soccer City.

76 mins: SUBSTITUTION

Uruguay bring on striker Sebastian Abreu for Edinson Cavani. That's their changes all done already.

74 mins: SUBSTITUTION

Stephen Appiah comes on for Samuel Inkoom for Ghana, before Diego Forlan lashes a right-foot free-kick from 35 yards that has Richard Kingson sprawling across his line as it flashes just wide of his left-hand post...

59 mins: YELLOW CARD

Diego Perez is booked for a clumsy foul on Kwadwo Asamoah..

55 mins: GOAL Uruguay 1-1 Ghana (Forlan)

54 mins: YELLOW CARD

This quarter-final is starting to get stretched, which means expect more chances. John Pantsil is booked for a foul on Jorge Fucile on the edge of the Ghana area, out on the right.

48 mins: YELLOW CARD

Uruguay's struggles continue as Egidio Arevalo is booked for obstructing Kevin-Prince Boateng. The great Paolo Montero would have been proud of that one.

Muntari, 45min + 2 / That was the last kick of the half. And what a kick..

38 mins: SUBSTITUTION

Ghana are pressing, biting into their tackles - they've shrugged off a lacklustre start and are dominating this game now. Another blow for Uruguay as captain Diego Lugano limps off and is replaced by Andres Scotti...

36min: Ghana are a very defensive side..

20 mins: YELLOW CARD

Jorge Fucile is booked - could have been for either of his two fouls inside a few seconds, and the defender will be suspended if Uruguay reach the semi-final

8 mins :

There's the first sign of Ghana players shooting from a silly distance - Kwadwo Asamoah shoots lamely wide from 25 yards when he should have just pumped the ball back into the Uruguay box. Wasteful.

Africa is staging the World Cup for the first time, with 32 nations competing in 64 games until the final on 11 July.

France and Uruguay contested a truly awful goalless draw in the second match of the 2010 World Cup at the Cape Town Stadium.

The result ensured that both of the opening day Group A fixtures ended in draws - but there was much more to savour in South Africa's earlier game against Mexico.

The match in Cape Town never really got going; instead of sparking into life, it deteriorated into a largely forgettable contest only briefly illuminated by the occasional moment of trickery and skill.

Mandela misses World Cup opening after family death

* Source: BBC / 11.06.2010

The World Cup has opened amid jubilant scenes in South Africa, but Nelson Mandela missed the event after a car crash killed his great-granddaughter.

Zenani Mandela, 13, died when the car taking her home from a pre-competition concert in Soweto overturned.

The car's driver was arrested and charged with drink-driving.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation said the tragedy made it inappropriate for the former president, who is 91, to attend the opening ceremony in Johannesburg. ...

Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter dies in car crash

* Source: BBC / 11.06.2010

Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter has been killed in a car crash after a concert on the eve of the World Cup.

Zenani Mandela, 13, died when travelling home after the concert in Soweto, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said. No-one else was hurt.

Zenani was one of Mr Mandela's nine great-grandchildren.

The incident came just hours before the former South African president was due to attend the opening of the World Cup in Johannesburg.

Early reports quoted police as saying Zenani had been travelling with Nelson Mandela's former wife, Winnie Madikizela, when the accident happened near Johannesburg city centre.

But the Foundation told the BBC Winnie Madikizela was not in the car, which was the only vehicle involved in the crash at around 0030 (2230 GMT on Thursday).

"The family has asked for privacy as they mourn this tragedy," said the Foundation in a statement.

Zenani had celebrated her 13th birthday on 9 June. ...

  • Reporters in SA gunpoint robbery

Three foreign journalists covering the World Cup in South Africa have been robbed at gunpoint, police say.

One of them saw two robbers as they broke into their lodgings near Johannesburg in the early morning.

"One of the suspects pointed a gun at the journalist and told him to lie down," police spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
